    Don't waste your time or funds! Don't buy this scanner. Get one with a keypad so you can find and enter the freq's you need at radioreference.com. The Public Safety transmissions here are 800mhz. Description on this scanner states it will receive PD/FD/EMS within that freq. range. First you have to allow the scanner to search from 806 to 956mhz so it may find your desired agencies. This willl take a LONG time since there are many interference freq's you will be locking out then you have to try to catch a transmission on each freq. in your area so you can put them in your private bank, again no keypad. Twenty minutes and I was fed up pushing lock out and getting nothing and I mean not a single transmission, in any of the banks! This is when I began researching and found that this scanner will not receive an 800mhz TRUNKING radio system which our agencies here use. Would have not wasting my time if that had been included in the sellers Description/Features. It's going to be my first returned item. 1Update on previous review:Highly recommend this item now!!!!! I gave this item a bad review when I first got it (for static and transmission interruptions). Since then I found that this item is fine, it was the recommended external speaker that was the problem ( in a review the speaker was recommended and was sold as a package deal when I bought the Scanner). Once I removed the speaker (as I was going to return/replace the scanner) a broadcast came over PERFECTLY clear and uninterrupted. AND the built in speaker for the scanner was fine.......no external speaker needed. Just so you know, when an external speaker is attached, it by-passes the internal speaker completely. When I was purchasing and reading review it was suggested that the scanner NEEDED an external speaker........NOT TRUE!!!! The scanner works beautifully without the external speaker and I am now very pleased with this scanner. Sometimes reading reviews hurt you, I hope this one helps you. This is a really good scanner for what I needed and I am very happy with it now that I removed the external speaker. 5... beginner when it comes to police scanners and am glad this was very easy to set up I'm a beginner when it comes to police scanners and am glad this was very easy to set up. You just literally plug in the power and plug in the antenna and you are good to go.Thanks to earlier reviews I bought an aftermarket antenna and used it at the get go so i haven't run into the issues with reception that other reviewers have mentioned.Also thanks to another earlier review I was able to (fairly) easily program my local police department's channel into the private bank. Although it did take a little extra time because for one I couldn't input the channel directly and for two the search arrows have to be pushed over and over again for each channel change instead of being able to simply hold the button down and have it scroll through quickly to the channel I wanted. This lead to me having to hit the scroll up botton I kid you not 150 times before I got to the station I wanted and was able to save it into the private bank. But now that it's in there it is super convenient.The built in speaker is adequate and quite loud when turned up all the way. It is a tad fuzzy but it's hard to tell if that is due to the quality of the speaker or the quality of my local police's radio equipment (I live in a small town that is kind of behind the times when it comes to technology). That being said, even though it's a little fuzzy, I am still able to understand almost all of what is being said. 4) I do like the scanner Right out of the box this scanner is pre-programed to scan a huge number of known frequencies in use by fire, police, ambulance, CB, weather, and aircraft. The upside of this is that if all you do is plug it in and turn it on, you will immediately hear communication activity. The downside of this programming is that you will pick up signals you eventually decide don't interest you and locking out the ones you don't want turns out to be similar to swatting flies or playing whack-a-mole.... you have to catch it in the act Too, you can't eliminate or lock out all of the frequencies you don't want to scan because there is a numerical limit to how many frequencies the scanner will ignore.The scanner boasts 300 user programmable frequencies. This is true but misleading. Within the grouping of frequencies for police/fire/ambulance you can program 100 frequencies. Within the grouping for aircraft/marine, you can program another 100 frequencies. And there is a private group which can be programmed with 100 frequencies. Total = 300. But....within any of the ore-programed groups, say, aircraft, you can't make the scanner look for only the frequencies you programed. It will always look at your frequencies after it has scanned the ones it is pre-programed to scan. This wastes time and creates the possibility you'll miss something you want/need to hear since a large number of the pre-programed frequencies are either always quiet or irrelevant to your interests. If there is a way to make the scanner completely ignore its factory programming and scan just the frequencies of interest to me, I haven't yet figured it out. (I could have the scanner scan only the private frequency group and ignore everything else, but doing this limits the number of scanned frequencies to only 100..... not really a solution, in my opinion.)I do like the scanner. And it represents reasonable value for the money, in my opinion. I'd like it more if I had more control over what it scans and what it doesn't scan. 4Amazing scanner. Well worth the low price! Amazing scanner. I m very familiar with radios and scanners and this scanner is top notch. The speaker volume is great but I am planning on purchasing an external speaker in hopes of a clearer sound. It came with a regular aluminum adjustable antenna along with a corded antenna that will mount to a window with suction cups for improved reception. I have no complaints on this item. If you are in the market for a simple, easy to use scanner, this one is the one I highly recommend. 5Buy a new adjustable sound speaker if you are mounting in your truck or car, it's not that loud. My mom got this for my birthday because I am a volunteer firefighter and I wanted something in my truck and in my home in case the radio I got from my FD is dead or something. Surprisingly, I was thinking that this would be a letdown because most of our emergency equipment like sirens and lights are hard to find, I found out that I heard my fire department on the first turn on!! I love this thing. But be warned the sound quality is good, don't get me wrong, but I needed a speaker in order to hear it louder in my truck. Thanks!! 5Good scanner for desktop or mobile Good scanner for desktop or mobile. I bought this for mobile use. It fits perfectly in my center console which is very small. I always prefer Uniden Scanners. This is a great cheap scanner for a beginner to use. Easy to understand and operate. 5Best, easied scanner to work.. Had an old one from '' '' ?? Always had to reset channels . This one I set local channels , turn it on and BAM! I can scan my local channels that I programmed in. Kinda sad though , listening to my local PD , FD , like listening to the 3 stooges.. lol 5Scanner It does scan all 1700 available frequencies so it's a little slow you miss a lot of the back and forth. It has amazing range i can pick up services 20 + miles away but I miss the local stuff cause I can't lock in only those channels. And yes you can save them in favorites but it scans them after making the the full sweep of the 1700 possible channels. Also go for the larger extension speaker the little speaker built in is a little small for the job. But all in all for the price you can hear all available channels , and it does come with everything you need to plug and play right out of the box. 3Fantastic scanner. I had one similar many years ago ... Fantastic scanner. I had one similar many years ago and just missed having it around. This model has much more channel capacity with 100 different frequencies capable of being stored in the private settings for my county. I've read about how people have some trouble programming it, and there is a small learning curve. But once you understand how to do it, it's no big deal. Very compact and reliable scanner. During the recent massive snow storm, I learned a new appreciation for our first responders and the work they actually do on a daily basis. I highly recommend. 5
