Truth hurtsDespite loosing the popular vote, George W. Bush was sworn in as the President of the United States. While this book is written by an admittedly biased person, the bias is in favor of truth, justice and liberty.Considering these factors were not used to determine the presidential winner of the 2000 elections, the American public could do a lot worse. Begala exposes how Bush's seemingly incoherent statements mask a far greater incompetence than has been suggested. Although it may seem inconsequential or cute to the underinformed, Begala assures us there are seriouis consequences from this behavor that will ultimately affect the United StatesYes, it looks like a very long and trying four years (assuming Bush does not do anyhing stupid enough to shorten the term) but intellegent citizens armed with this book can and will survive the most unAmerican election in ages. 5Then Gov Bush's record in TexasAfter a long flight from Australia to LAX on my way to Vegas i picked this book up from the airport bookstore as i wanted a quick read & was interested in Bush's record in Texas. As you know it was written by Paul Begala a Texan himself & along with his partner James Carville was responsible for the Clinton campaign of 92.Begala's writting style is straight to the point, full of humour & after a long flight this makes for good reading.Being from Australia & not knowing Bush's record in Texas this was an eye opener to say the least. In fairness to Begala he does point out he is fairly partisan & with that admission it is up to the reader to exercise caution & to seek out books that might not be so biast so you can get a more balanced view. But to the subject at hand if you are a democrat this will confirm all your fears about Bush if you are a republican you might have no problems with this or say it is biased.Begala lays it all out concentrating on Bush's public & political life not his personal life.It is all here from The National Guard issue right up to Bush's strong support for Gun rights & looking out for corporate interests.Reading this you will understand how Bush managed to raise so much money & forgoed federal matching funds as corporate America has never had a better freind. With this book being easy to carry round i would have thought it would have been a good idea for the Democratic Party to do a deal with the publisher & to furnish all their party operatives with a copy of this book in 2000.Who knows it might have helped convince a few undecided voters in Florida. 3Its true! Our children (my peers) are not learning!Unfortunately, not being very much a liberal, I do have to agree with most points that this author makes on children in America and education. Most people of my age (high school aged) come to school everyday without the intention to learn or be productive, and false values such as cheating and forgery are regarded as a norm and sometimes even encouraged (and this coming from one of the best high schools in Philadelphia (or supposedly: Central High). I do recall last year while taking freshmen biology, for EVERY test, almost all people would make cheat sheet and hide it under their test papers. The teacher, being very much "out there", did not notice any of this and a whole entire year of biology was wasted for most people (including me unfortunately). As the difficulties of my classes increased, cheating also subsided (as with AP chem and euro), however, they were not non-existent. While discussing the AP exams taken in the States, I'd like to point out that a mere 60% is needed to achieve a 5 ("extremely well qualified") on the Chemistry test, and this is of course still very difficult for many of us to achieve (me included). This is not because my peers and I are unintelligent, but its because the way our schools are ran and also the fund that we receive. Sadly, most of the fund is going to the war and the maintenance of Iraq, and not where they should be -- in our schools.A sad link I also found is that often war is waged in order to suppress domestic issues at home and to get the general mass to "look the other way" (such as that with Louis XIV, Bismarck and even Hitler). Not to accuse Bush of being a Hitlerian, but the radical and almost belligerent stance towards Iraq did indeed successfully direct the attention of the public mass towards these supposed weapons of mass destruction (which has not been found yet) instead of domestic issues such as senior benefits, *real* tax cuts for ordinary ppl that's not the top 1%, and mostly importantly, investments in our education.Do buy this book regardless of your political stance and whether you agree with Bush's politics or not. It address something that Bush's politics has successfully veiled, and without a generation of dedicated and educated kids, the maintenance of our country's status will be very much difficult. 5The BEST book I've read all year!Unlike the people on the "other" side of the aisle, Mr Begala gives you the facts. He tells you where he got them from, so that you can see for yourself. This book exposes the fiction and folly of the Republican party. More importantly, it was written BEFORE the election (if you could call it that). This isn't sour grapes. It isn't payback. It is just the straightforward truth.Mr. Begala tells us about a spoiled little rich kid who grew up to be a frathouse trouble maker, who believed that like Comodus from Gladiator he desereved to be Emporer by birth right. This book leaves out the sordid tales of drinking and partying into his 40's. It leaves the rumour about marrying a fellow alcoholic who killed her boyfriend in a car crash. It simply tells the story of "Richie Rich" and how he failed at everything, but still made millions and even lost an election, but became president. Furthermore, it tells you where to look for the proof. After all this is life in the New Roman Emipire isn't it? 4One SidedI rate this book a two star rating which I consider not the worst but below average. It is a short book that I was able to read in a few hours but it did hold my attention. The book presents many of the already printed infamous quotes from the President during his campaign. It starts with his priveleged background and the fact that his family's influence kept him out of Vietnam and in the National Guard, which he disappeared from for over a year. It touches breifly on his failed business ventures. But it really hits gear when discussing his record as Texas Governor and his Presidential campaign. His public record is reviewed in the book and it is packed full of information that is note worthy. The reason I couldn't give this book a higher rating was the fact that it is so obviously partisan. According to this book Bush is a flat out idiot that never did anything on his own and never did one thing right. There has to be something out there positive to write about. This book did not explore both sides. But it was easy to follow and read well. For those of you looking for some humor or some background on our President you could add this book on the list to read with others. But it should not be taken as a lone source of information. 2Synoptic but with a LOT of SpinFor such a little book (135pgs w/ another 15pgs of citations) Paul Begala's book packs a certain punch. As with anything political, understanding who's doing the writing (a former Clinton speechwriter/consultant) and what's their slant (demonstrate the case against George Dubya) helps to objectify the facts. The facts laid out in each chapter depict a different policy (internatl affairs/health care/social insecurity, etc). It is interesting to note over the past years that the Republican criticism of Clinton's Administration for fund raising and the insinuation of impropriety of accepting funds from friends/lawyers/celebrities who might've had an influence on legislation. But i don't seem to remember anything being said about certain OIL constituencies having certain rights in Bahrain due to Bush's father (then vice president). It didn't seem to matter that there WAS a conflict of interest and George Jr. benefited from that one as a member of the Cabinet! Thank you Mr. Begala for giving some fresh spin and perspective. The only chapter which is a little out-of-sync is the one on health care, which Bush's BIG plan was just unveiled recently, definitely after this had gone to press. I'm sure that Begala would rip it to shreds just the same! It's clear that he does admire the man, and is in awe of Bush's amazing ability to "fail upwards" as he puts it.As you read the book and understand how his failure as a student and later as a businessman, just kept propelling him higher and higher in the eco and political chain. (maybe even getting him to the highest failure of all?) The book is quite funny at times....but after finishing my laughter I was disturbed.....not at the absurdity of his claims, but even if the smallest iota of truth can be revealed from Begala's claims (which are documented from Bush's OWN words across the nation from the New York Times, to the Dallas Morningstar and Houston Chronicle to the LA times)...then this country could be in a lot of trouble. 3Is Our Children Learning? It's hysterical!!! Paul Begala hails from Texas and knows all too well what kind of a governor"Dubya" was! It's a laugh-out-loud read. 5Accurate, but a small part of the problem.By now, its pretty clear the "$hrub" ain't the brightest guy in the world. The press tells us every day and Bush firmly backs it up most every time he opens his mouth.Whoever runs against Bush in 2004 could use this book to script a bunch of mudslinging ads that make up the "substance" of most elections these days. Over and over, this book tells us how stupid Bush is and how he favors the rich and lets people pollute. If you want to read a Bush-bashing book, this will fit the bill.Like the televised debates and most of the news media fodder on political issues these days, the intelligence of Bush is all but irrelevant (though the apparent lack of it doesn't help any) to the day to day or even long term strength and prosperity of the United States. Just because other candidates are probably intellectually superior to Bush doesn't mean much when they are all owned by the same companies seeking tax breaks, licenses to run sweat shops, "self regulation", and the freedom to dump any and all pollutants in somebody else's backyard. If you are interested in politics and the state of the US this is a book to consider reading, however, it exclusively airs the $hrub's dirty laundry and presents a very small part of the picture. To see a much more complete picture, pick up:"If The Gods Had Meant Us to Vote They Would Have Given Us Candidates" by Jim Hightower 2An Excellent ReadIf you think George W Bush is unqualified to be president, after you read this book you'll be praying for the next election. Begala does a great job at exposing Bush for exactly what he is-a rich kid who somehow made it into the white house. Begala offers at least one Bushism at the start of every chapter; he also utilizes his great sense of sarcasm and humor to keep the reader from putting the book down. What also makes this book strong is that Begala gives overviews on how Bush handles many different topics such as education, the environment, and social security. Begala does a great job at simplifying things for the reader and he also excels at citing his work well to give it legitimacy. It is greatly disturbing to know that the president is against lowering classroom sizes, he skipped a year in the national guard, and he thinks there's no such thing as a hate crime! We need more authors like Begala to show things as they are and also to infuse the books with a little humor too. 5Readable, Persuasive, if Partisan Case Against G.W. BushPaul Begala's brief, partisan, but highly readable and very persuasive tome on George W. Bush reminds this reviewer of some of James Carville's books. The saving grace of this book is that unlike all of the Bush biographies, it is brief, yet well-documented.Begala looks at Bush not only at his background as governor of Texas, but most importantly, looks at where Bush stands on various issues and why his stands are not in the best interests of America. Issues discussed include Social Security reform, education, environment, foreign policy, the death penalty, and health care. The book is designed to help the voter make an informed decision on whether or not Bush deserves to be president.Begala spends relatively little time on Bush's personal and business scandals, with the exception of the little-reported "missing year" of 1972-1973, when Bush evidently did not report for Air National Guard duty. It is important only in that the media have focused in so much microscopic detail every movement of Bill Clinton's life, yet George W. Bush's life remains largely unexplored. Outside of this, the book stays focused on the issues.Recommended for all those interested in the upcoming election and for those who may not have made a decision on the choice for president. 4
